Summary

Notifications about cats as enemies of snakes are rarely given. It is interesting that cats are kept as pets often in great hotels at the Mexican Riviera Maya (Peninsula of Yucatán), and in particular, at the island of Cyprus where they are thought to combat the snakes. The following contribution is meant to give some information about the Cyprus monastery „St. Nicholas of the Cats“ which has been founded about 325 AC at order given by the empress Helena (248/250 – 329). She got her son, emperor Konstantin the Great (306 – 337), to send two shiploads of cats to the monks in order to combat the local nuisance caused by the snakes. It is reported thoroughly about the legend of the successful deployment of the monastery cats against the snakes.
