Rudolf Zimmermann (1878-1943) wurde in Rochlitz/Sachsen geboren. Er wirkte als breit aufgestellter Naturforscher und Naturfotograf. Sein offenbar unbändiger Drang zum Schreiben brachte eine Fülle von Publikationen auf den verschiedensten Gebieten hervor. Die größten Verdienste erwarb er wohl als Ornithologe und Mitbegründer des „Vereins Sächsischer Ornithologen“ sowie als Pionier der deutschen Naturfotografie. Er war aber auch einer der Ersten, die Lurche und Kriechtiere in ihrem natürlichen Umfeld fotografierten. In der hier vorgestellten Biografie wird besonderes Augenmerk auf seinen Werdegang im Kontext mit seinem sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Umfeld gelegt. Ebenso werden seine Beiträge zur Herpetofauna Sachsens und seine Verdienste als Naturfotograf dargestellt. Seit 1913 lebte und wirkte Zimmermann in Dresden, wo er schließlich nach schwerer Krankheit 1943 verstarb.

Rudolf Zimmermann (1878-1943) was born in Rochlitz/Saxony. He worked as a naturalist in several disciplines and as a nature photographer. Due to his strong urge to write he produced a lot of publications. In addition, he rendered a great service as an ornithologist and co-founder of the „Association of Saxonian Ornithologists” and as a pioneer of German nature photography. Zimmermann was one of the first to take photos of reptiles and amphibians under natural conditions. This biography is devoted to his personal development in the context of the social and economic conditions of the former times. Special focus is laid on his contributions to the herpetofauna of Saxony and his merits as nature photographer. Since 1913 Zimmermann lived and worked in Dresden, where he died after severe illness in 1943.
